Little Cayman

Overview

The first European sighting of the Cayman Islands was by Christopher Columbus in 1503. He named them Las Tortugas after the islands numerous sea turtles. Sir Frances Drake, the first English visitor, named the islands Caiman after the Neo-Taino nations' word for alligator.

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory. These islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are just 480 miles south of Miami.
Little Cayman is the smallest and least populated of the three islands.

Entry requirements

All U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and Bermuda, will be required to present a valid passport.

Language

English is the official language.

Currency/Banking

The Cayman Islands have their own currency called the Cayman Dollar (CI$). This dollar has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar. CI$1.00 equals US$1.25 or, the US dollar equals CI $.80. US and Cayman Dollars are accepted throughout the islands. Most major credit cards are also accepted and ATM’s are available.

Getting There

The Cayman Islands are only a 70 minute flight from Miami. The main airport is Owen Roberts (GCM) and located on Grand Cayman. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have inter-island flights.

There are more many weekly flights into the Cayman Islands including 28 flights each week between Miami and Grand Cayman with connections to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. American Airlines and Cayman Airways fly direct from Miami.

Inter-island service between Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman is provided by Cayman Airways and Cayman Express. Cayman Airways provides daily jet service to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, while Cayman Express provides service four times daily to both islands from Grand Cayman.

Activities

Little Cayman is a very quiet island. When not relaxing on a hammock visitors typically spend their days scuba diving or fishing. The main scuba attraction is the famous Bloody Bay wall with a sheer coral wall going from 20 – 6000ft. There are more than 50 dive sites around this island.
Fishing is also a big attraction. Bonefish, small tarpon can be fished by permit. Little Cayman also has has a nature preserve which is perfect for bird and iguana watching.
